UK Golf

It is generally believed that golf has its origins in the UK, and in Scotland in particular (in fact Scotland is sometimes described as "The Home of Golf"). This is for a number of reasons:

Golf is mentioned in two 15th century Scottish laws.
The oldest written record of a golf game appears in the archives of the Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society (known today as The Royal Burgess Golfing Society). These archives describe playing in Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh.
The oldest golf course that is still playable is located Edinburgh: The Musselburgh Old Links Golf Course. The course dates back to at least 1672, and may even have been used as early as 1567 by Mary Queen of Scots.

Given this history, as you might expect, the UK (and Scotland in particular) remains one of the leading countries in the world for golf. There are many excellent golf resorts throughout the UK, and hundreds of different golf courses, including perhaps as many as 550 golf courses in Scotland alone.
