Click Here | Product Description: In this factual book, Alexandra M. Brown gives an informative account of the events surrounding the Windsor Castle fire of 1992. The book briefly explores the history of the Castle and discusses its role as the oldest royal residence in continuous use since its original construction by William the Conqueror in the 1070s. In "The Windsor Castle Fire and Restoration", the events leading up to the fire and the blaze itself are described in vivid detail, as well as the immense salvage operation required to rescue the priceless treasures stored within the grand rooms of the Castle. The fire led to the discovery of several architectural gems of great importance to British historians, including 17th Century frescos by the Italian artist Antonio Verrio, one of the oldest windows in Britain with its original glass still in place, and a 14th Century undercroft. The GBP37 million restoration project is also recounted and the actions taken at this stage are explained, as well as the royal family's role during the process. The fire of Windsor Castle created a political storm that has had a lasting effect on the British Monarchy. The book brings the story of the restoration forward to the present chronicling the continuing role of Windsor Castle in the affairs of state and the lives of the Royal Family. |

Click Here | Product Description: Housemaid Jane Bee's summer duties run to dusting the props for a week of pageantry at Windsor Castle, the Queen's favorite haunt. But the Investiture of the new Knights of the Garter ends up combining pomp with a extremely unpleasant circumstance.... Mild-mannered art curator Roger Pettibon is found dead, a ceremonial sword in his back and a Royal Garter around his knee. The police are quick to arrest moody Court painter Victor Fabiani, at work on a portrait of the regal face that launched a billion postage stamps. But Fabiani's confession--despite its story of art forgery and blackmail--doesn't ring true to Jane. Nor to Her Majesty, who dispatches her on a discreet inquiry among the cream of society gathered for the Ascot races. And, as Jane traces the twisty lineage of more than one family, Windsor's ancient battlements witness a second death--and their second ordeal in five years, by fire and water.... |
