which was launched in 1765. She served in the American War of
Independence, during the French Revolutionary Wars, and most famously

Click Here | Product Description: One of the world's best-known warships, HMS Victory was the flagship of Lord Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Still a commissioned vessel, she lies today at Portsmouth, England, where thousands visit her each year. Many marvel at her beauty and wonderful state of preservation, the result of the extraordinary work lavished on her over the past two hundred years. A must for Nelson enthusiasts, historians, and preservationists, this book tells the story of the painstaking historical research and fine craftsmanship that restored the ship to its age-of-sail glory. The narrative of the restoration is accompanied by two hundred recently commissioned drawings that show the ship as it was in 1805 and a hundred paintings and photographs. In addition to the technical details of construction and fittings, the book describes the Victory's fabled career and what life on board was like for the officers and crew. |

Click Here | Product Description: There is no more illustrious warship name in British naval history than HMS Victory, which is inextricably linked with Admiral Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. This fascinating book celebrates all three at a most appropriate moment - the 200th anniversary of Nelson's greatest triumph and his death in HMS Victory. What is less well known is that six warships before Nelson's carried the name Victory, the first being Sir John Hawkins' during the Battle of the Armada in 1588, which sailed from Plymouth to battle the Spanish. All manner of maritime life is included in this book, from piracy in the Azores to gentlemanly encounters between fleets as well as the battle of annihilation that was Trafalgar. The full horror, majesty and thunder of naval warfare in the age of fighting sail is revealed through the first-hand accounts of those who were there. The post-Trafalgar career of Victory is studied, continuing to the present, for she is still in commission, as Flagship of the Second Sea Lord.
'H.M.S. VICTORY' includes the forgotten story of HMS Victory AFTER Trafalgar, including the amazing triumph she obtained for Britain in the Baltic while flying the flag of Admiral Sir James Saumarez. The same chapter includes the never before published letters of a humble Royal Marine who believed his wife had drowned off Guernsey, only to find she had run off with a sailor! It also tells the story of the parallel lives of Nelson and HMS Victory, for the book places the human element to the fore throughout. The stories of other admirals who flew their flag in Victory are also touched on, including Howe, Keppel, Hood and Jervis.
The Foreword is provided by Vice Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent, Second Sea Lord and Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command in the Trafalgar 200 year. There are also contributions from Admiral Sir Alan West, First Sea Lord and other serving members of the Royal Navy, including Commodore Allan Adair, Commander British Forces Gibraltar, whose forebear was killed in Victory at Trafalgar and Lieutenant Commander Frank Nowosielski, current Commanding Officer HMS Victory.
Superbly illustrated, well researched and written by two leading naval experts, 'H.M.S. VICTORY' will be enjoyed by all those for whom naval heritage and the 'Immortal Memory' of Nelson, his ship and achievements hold a fascination.'H.M.S VICTORY' is the third in Pen and Sword's 'Warships of the Royal Navy' series. The previous two titles were 'WARSPITE' (2001), about a legendary battleship that fought in both WW1 and WW2, and 'H.M.S. LONDON' (2003), about a Portsmouth-built cruiser that saw action from the Russian convoys in WW2 to the Yangtze. The previous two titles were written by Iain Ballantyne, placing the experiences of ordinary sailors in war and peace at the core of the story. |

This is the story of Britain's most illustrious warship, immortalized as Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship in the Battle of Trafalgar. Constructed from the wood of over 6,000 trees, HMS Victory was designed as a "first rate ship," the Admiralty's designation for its largest ships of the line which packed a formidable punch with more than 100 guns arranged on three decks. In addition to the Battle of Trafalgar, HMS Victory saw action in the First and Second Battles of Ushant and during the Battle of Cape St Vincent. After bringing Nelson's body back to England, the Victory sailed out on a number of expeditions until her retirement in 1812. This magnificent ship is now the centerpiece of Portsmouth's historic docks and serves as the oldest naval ship still in commission. HMS Victory provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the British sailors who served on her. |

Click Here | Product Description: With the approach of the 200th anniversary of the Royal Navy's greatest battle off Cape Trafalgar on October 21st 1805, much attention will be given to our most tangible symbol of that most ferocious engagement, Nelson's fully preserved flagship HMS Victory. Much has been written about HMS Victory but it is often simplistic and romanticised or clearly aimed at the technical requirements of the naval historian. In Nelson's Victory: 101 Questions & Answers about HMS Victory, Nelson's Flagship at Trafalgar 1805, Peter Goodwin adopts a fresh approach to explain the workings of the only surviving 'line of battle' ship of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. As Victory was engaged in battle during only two per cent of her active service, Peter Goodwin also provides a glimpse into life and work at sea during the other ninety-eight per cent of the time. As technical and historical advisor to the ship in Portsmouth, he is in a unique position to investigate an interpret not only the ship's structure but also the essential aspects of shipboard life: victualling, organisation, discipline, domestic arrangements and medical care. In his role as Keeper and Curator of the ship, the autho |
