Giant's CausewayThe Giant's Causeway is an area of approximately 40,000 interlocked basalt columns, located on the Northeast coast of Northern Ireland. Most of the columns are hexagonal, but there are some with four, five, seven or eight sides. The columns which appear to form stepping stones lead down from cliff faces towards and then under the sea.
Giants Causeway Ancient Rock Formation, Antrim, Northern Ireland Photographic Print McCormack, Gareth Buy at AllPosters.com According to legend the causeway was built by the Irish giant Finn McCool (Irish: Fionn mac Cumhaill) so that he could walk to Scotland in order to fight the Scottish giant, Benandonner - there are many versions of what is supposed to have happened next in the story. In reality of course, the columns were in fact really formed by volcanic action. Today, the Giant's Causeway is managed and owned by bthe National Trust, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, and is now probably Northern Ireland's most popular tourist attraction. |
