Product Description:
“White butterflies danced one above another, making with their white shifting flakes the outline of a shattered marble column above the tallest flowers; the glass roofs of the palm house shone as if a whole market full of shiny green umbrellas had opened in the sun; and in the drone of the aeroplane the voice of the summer sky murmured its fierce soul.”

On a hot summer’s day, the Palm House at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, sees the shuffle of thousands of visitors. While some are glad to catch a moment’s rest, others have been inspired by the house’s magnificent displays—both floral and human. A century ago, one of the Garden’s most famous visitors turned her observations into an enchanting story.

Kew Gardens is one of Virginia Woolf’s earliest short stories. The gentle narrative drifts among an eclectic group of visitors as they stroll through the Gardens, including a young couple, a pair of middle-aged ladies looking for tea, and even a snail making a determined trek through the flower beds. Woolf creates an impressionistic world with snippets of conversation, wondering thoughts, and sparks of color.

This edition published by Kew features delightful illustrations by Livi Mills. It will be a treasured addition to the bookshelves of Woolfians everywhere.

Hampton Court was the favourite palace of England s King Henry VIII (reigned 1509 1547), who spent enormous sums of money turning it into one of the most magnificent palaces in his realm. About three centuries later Queen Victoria opened the palace and its gardens to visitors, creating a major public attraction.

In 1908, a man named Frank Pick was given responsibility for publicising the city of London s transport system, known as the Underground. He began commissioning artists to produce posters encouraging the public to use the system. He believed the posters could also enrich the quality of life in the city.

During the 1920s and 1930s, these posters reached a peak of stylistic quality. Designing a poster for the Underground became an honour among both great and aspiring artists. Pick was aware that almost every attraction in London, including Hampton Court, was within reach of the Underground. Eye-catching posters enticed travellers indirectly, by focussing on the destination rather than the mode of travel.

In this colouring book, you will find 22 posters featuring Hampton Court. The posters were created for the Underground by many different artists; the originals are shown as small pictures on the inside front and back covers. When you colour in these pictures, you can try to copy the original colours and style, or you might decide to use your own. The last page of this book is blank so that you can draw and colour in your own picture. Imagine your house as a grand English castle, and see if you can capture it on the page.

Product Description:
Kew Gardens, Queens, evolved with the dawn of the 20th century. The lush, hilly terrain―“the backbone of Long Island”―is situated north of the Victorian village of Richmond Hill. In 1910, Alrick Hubble Man noted the 1909 completion of the Queensborough Bridge and envisioned a modern sister community to Richmond Hill in this northern terrain. He developed Kew Gardens, offering people the ability to have homes in an area of breathtaking country beauty while continuing to work in the city. The century-old Kew Gardens Civic Association, formed in 1914, remains a vibrant, active organization. Its members were a large force behind the advancements in Kew Gardens; in 1915, they fought for underground wiring to prevent the installation of unsightly electric poles, and they continue to serve the community today.

From sweet Rosa alba and Camellia reticulate to flashy Amaryllis pardina and deeply hued Higginsia regalis, here are 44 floral engravings to color. For more than 100 years, after moving publication to Kew in 1841, the hand-drawn and colored illustrations in Curtis's Botanical Magazine were made from live specimens at the Royal Botanic Gardens. This coloring book presents 44 of the magazine's beautiful full-page illustrations-nearly all of them drawn by the prolific Walter Hood Fitch-pairing the final colored versions with the uncolored engravings. Use the original as a guide for your coloring efforts, or strike out on your own and give these floral drawings a personal creative touch.
