Bristol is the UK's sixth largest, and eighth most populous city.
Bristol is located in Southwest England. It is located on the River Avon, and also has a short coastline on the Severn Estuary which flows into the Bristol Channel.
For many centuries, Bristol was one of Britain's top four cities, after London, but alongside Norwich and York.
With the beginning of the industrial revolution in the 18th century, and the rapid growth of Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester, Bristol did fall down the rankings of UK cities, even though it continued to grow.
Today, Bristol remains the largest city, and center of economic activity, employment, education, and culture in its region.
People from Bristol are called Bristolians.
Historically, Bristol's economy was very much linked to the sea. Today, it still remains an important port, although the Port of Bristol has now moved from the city center to Avonmouth (a suburb of Bristol), and the Royal Portbury Dock is located on the western edge of Bristol.
Other important industries in the city include aerospace, electronics, and creative media.
